Why Detailers Don't Get Ahead?

After a recent phone call with a detailer on the East Coast I begin to think about the reasons why most detailers don't get ahead. Why they are always in crisis mode in the operation of their businesses, and in general struggling to make a go of it. Here are some of the reasons I have heard from detailers during my several years in the business:

1. We tried that before
2. Our place is different
3. It costs too much
4. That is beyond my capacity
5. That's not something I can do
6. We are too busy to do that
7. It is too radical a change
8. I don't have the time
9. Not enough help
10. That will make all my equipment obsolete
11. Need to research it more
12. Our shop is just too small for it
13. Not a practical approach for hands-on operators
14. The employees will never buy it
15. The employees will scream bloody murder
16. I have never done this before
17. Increases our expenses
18. That is too ivory tower, not for my small business
19. Let's get back to reality
20. There is no problem
21. Why change? Everything is working OK.
22. I simply don't like the idea
23. You're right, but.....
24. You are two years ahead of your time with this
25. We are not ready for that
26. We don't have the money, equipment, space or employees
27. We can't afford it
28 Can't teach an old dog new tricks
29. Good idea, but impractical for me
30. Let's hold off for awhile
31. Let me give it some more thought
32. Put it in writing for me to consider
33. Everyone will laugh at me for doing it
34. No that again
35. We will loose money in the long run.
36. Where did you come up with that idea
37. We do all right without it
38. What can you expect from your employees
39. It has never been tried before, has it?
40. Let's shelve it for the time being
41. Let me talk with my wife/accountant; father
42. Has anyone else tried this before
43. My customers won't like it
44. I really don't see the connection in my business
45. What you are really saying is....
46. Maybe that will work in your shop but not in mine
47. I think I should consider it further before doing anything
48. What do my competitors do
49. Let's sleep on it
50. It can't be done
51. It is just too much trouble to change
52. It will not pay for itself
53. I know a shop that tried it and it did not work
54. It's impossible
55. We have always done it this way
56. Let me think about it and I will get back to you
57. Let's wait until conditions are more favorable
58. I am not sure I am going to stay in the business
59 I might be selling the business
60. I am only doing this for fun

The common thread that runs throught all of these responses is a negative mental attitude. Somewhat like the glass being half empty rather than half full. Consider these responses and ask yourself how many times who have said these things or even thought them. They certainly will stop you from moving forward in a positive way.
