I watched a guy drop in $1.00 to buy an Armor-All pad, and then looked down for the "Pull" knob. Since there is none, and since the decals at the time weren't made without the arrow that says "Pull," he actually pressed the arrow trying to make it vend. He finally reached into the slot to try to find out what happened and found his vended product.
At another wash recently, I watched someone trying to "cheap" a mechanical vendor. He bought two Armor-All pads, but he would pull the vend knob after each quarter dropped hoping it would dispense early.
